Jungle Book Character Comparison

 Mowgli

1967                                                                    2016

- A clear difference between the 1967 version and the 2016 Mowgli is that one is a drawn animated and the other is a real life actor. Both have a similar body type and the actor used in the 2016 version is from India which is keeping in line that the film is set in the Indian jungle. Furthermore, he is seen as innocent looking in both however the 2016 Mowgli seems more competent in the Jungle.

Baloo

     1967                                            2016

- One difference is that Baloo in the 2016 is much larger and bulkier and is much more of a bear rather than the fun cuddly looking 1967 version. Moreover, they both have a similar attitude and are slightly humorous but the 2016 Baloo is more serious further representing the darker tone of this original family classic.

Bagheera

1967                                  2016

- The 1967 version of Bagheera appears to be more light-hearted and friendly in comparison but is still seen and represented as a mentor and was there for Mowgli. The 2016 version also appears to be dark, slick and serious which could represent his authoritative figure to the boy and the stance that he would protect him from danger.

Shere Khan

1967                                                           2016

- The 2016 representation of Shere khan is much more frightening and intimidating in comparison which is helped by the realistic CGI, visible scars and a damaged eye and being voiced by Idris Elba's powerful voice. This modern version is ultimately more menacing and therefore is seen as much more of a dangerous threat and antagonist of the film in comparison to the 1967 version who is more light-hearted in design which is appropriate for the family genre.

King Louie

1967                                                              2016

- The 2016 CGI representation of King Louie is also more sinister. Firstly a clear difference is the sizing of them both. In 1967 he was a small orangutan that was a similar height to Mowgli, however in the 2016 version he is portrayed in the complete opposite way being a gigantic ape Furthermore in 1967, Louie is seen as more wacky and fun from his look and attitude whereas the 2016 one is more serious and controlling with his sheer size and menacing look to be more intimidating matching the tone of this much darker film.

The Elephants

- One clear representation is how the elephants aren't as significant in the 2016 film since they are barely seen and say nothing in comparison to the 1967 version where they are used as a comedic element and represented as clumsy. However, this idea of the elephants being a joke and clumsy is changed in the 2016 version where they are percieved as wide and are respected amongst the animal kingdom.

  1. Good post here - i think it is interesting how the elephants in 1967 seem to be marching like a military order- you can link this to post colonialism.
